Editorial policy

The International Journal of Case Studies in Management is a refereed journal, meaning that all cases and teaching notes accepted for publication have undergone a rigorous process of peer evaluation. Our Review Committee and our Editorial Committee are composed of researchers and professors whose expertise in the case method stands as a guarantee of the relevance of the content, the rigour of the research methodology and the clarity of expression of the cases published.

The Journal accepts and publishes:

  • Original cases (unpublished);
  • Authorized adaptations (unpublished).

Submissions are assessed based on the following evaluation and acceptance criteria:

  • The relevance of the topic to management;
  • The richness of the content;
  • The case’s pedagogical value as demonstrated in the teaching notes;
  • The quality of the form;
  • The authenticity or plausibility of the situations presented;
  • The potential appeal to a broad readership.

The following presentation and submission guidelines apply:

  • Tables and graphs should be inserted in the body of the document;
  • Additional documents (kept to a minimum) should be presented in appendix;
  • Cases and documents should be submitted;
  • Where applicable, authorization must have been obtained from the individuals or companies;
  • A copy of the final version is sent to the participating individuals or company, along with a letter of appreciation;
  • The final version is deposited in electronic form.

The International Journal of Case Studies in Management will ensure that all pedagogical material it receives complies with the strict rules observed by HEC Montréal in its relations with individuals and companies that lend their support to the advancement of teaching. All cases submitted must be accompanied by a case registration form. If the case concerns actual individuals or a company, an authorization form duly signed by the persons and/or companies concerned must also be submitted with the case. The Journal favours real-life cases dealing with clearly identified companies, organizations or individuals, including real-life cases that are disguised, provided that such cases are accompanied by official authorizations from the companies or individuals involved. Moreover, the International Journal of Case Studies in Management will screen all material submitted for potentially litigious content and to ensure that it does not violate any rules of academic conduct. For all other ethical considerations, authors are subject to the rules established by HEC Montréal’s research ethics committee (Comité d'éthique de la recherche de HEC Montréal).

All cases deposited must comply with the Style Guide prepared by the Centre for Case Studies for professors, research assistants and secretaries.

Cases submitted must be accompanied by teaching notes explaining the relevance of the case for management education. As a general rule, teaching notes should cover the following aspects:

  • Teaching objectives;
  • Relationship to the management issues the case seeks to address;
  • Possible links to existing literature;
  • Links to other cases;
  • Links to course or program objectives;
  • Clear pedagogical approach;
  • Rigorous in-class development;
  • Preparatory questions;
  • Trigger questions to open discussion;
  • Organization of the board, use of a computer and other didactic tools;
  • Questions to advance the discussion;
  • Elements to sum up learning and reflections;
  • Report on initial in-class experimentation with the case, if applicable;
  • Possible article topics;
  • Etc.

It should be mentioned that the teaching notes will not be published in the Journal, but rather deposited with the Centre for Case Studies at the same time as the case, where they will be available for downloading by professors who have provided proof of their status.
